This Piano Chord Compass Solo turns chord construction into a compact sliding reference. Move the rear tab to select a root note, then read the aligned keys and interval windows to see how its chord types are built.

The tool measures approximately 7 x 5.5 inches (17.8 x 14.0 cm) and works without batteries, an app or a screen. This Solo edition includes one physical Compass only; the 72-page printed guidebook from the separate bundle edition is not included.

This device looks simple, but even with that simple appearance, it provides a LOT of information. It's easy to use, compact and sturdy, and even had a built-in stand. This class of simple slide rule is called a Nomograph, used to show known relationships between variables. You slide a part to line up your reference value, then read the other information you need from little windows, or where arrows or lines point or intersect. This tool hits all the marks. Slide the bump on the back to show the root of your chord in the ROOT window, and the other notes you need to build the chord are in the other windows. Of course, it works backwards to find the root for when you know the 5th, or the 7th, or the minor 3rd. Slide the bump so the note you know is in the window you want, and the rest of the notes for that chord are displayed. I've played music on a dozen different instruments, from cornet to guitar, soprano sax to tinwhistle, shakuhachi to piano (learning that now), but the thing I didn't study was music theory. Well, I am now. Every musician eventually needs this sort of information, no matter how they get it, especially if they want to improvise, jam with others, or compose. This tool is a good tool for this job. It's small, lightweight, durable, easy to read and easy to use, and it didn't cost an arm and a leg. A great thing these days, when money doesn't go as far as it used to. A great value! Like I said, I'm studying piano right now. I have the Chord Compass next to me on my music stand. You'd probably want it on your music stand, too.
